ARTIST BAR TALK
WeibsBilder

Monday, November 20, 2023
Favorit Bar, Damenstiftstraße 12, 80331 Munich

Twice a year, artists with an expressive and visual approach to art are invited to talk about themselves, their career and their work in the intimate setting of a bar talk.

In 1977, the painters Lisa Endriß, Lilith Lichtenberg, Alrun Prünster Soares, Sara Rogenhofer and Ursula Strauch-Sachs (1941-2015) refused to accept that the Munich artists' groups from SPUR to Kollektiv Herzogstraße were all male-dominated. In search of a "viable form of collective collaboration", they therefore founded the artist group WeibsBilder and collaborated together on paintings, objects and films until 1988. Now four of them talk about their joint practice and show excerpts from the film "Und immer lockt das WeibsBild".

"An animal, a night, a scream, a human“- CoBrA meets Mariko Saito
Alechinsky, Appel, Constant, Jorn, Saito
Live painting Mariko Saito

OPEN ART 2023

75 years ago, the CoBrA group (1948-1951) was founded in Paris. Surrounded by the destruction Hitler Germany left behind in Europe, the group was focused on looking positively into the future as well as critically examining the recent past. Contrary to the tendency towards colour-reduced abstraction, their strongly coloured figures painted in a seemingly naive way appeared provocative at the time.
Works on paper by Pierre Alechinsky, Karel Appel, Constant and Asger Jorn refer in this anniversary exhibition to the ideas of the CoBrA group such as fantasy and suggestion, expressionism and bad painting, children's art and the "dirt" of the street. To this day, CoBrA painting has not become obsolete. On the contrary, it serves artists even today as a source of inspiration for their practice. This is also the case for Mariko Saito (*1979), who lives in Paris and will paint the gallery windows in a live performance. For her "in today's material and consumption-oriented society", "the act of exchanging invisible energy" is particularly important.

ARTIST BAR TALK
Caroline Achaintre

Monday, February 13, 2023
Favorit Bar, Damenstiftstraße 12, 80331 Munich

Twice a year, artists with an expressive and visual approach to art are invited to talk about themselves, their career and their work in the intimate setting of a bar talk.
London-based artist Caroline Achaintre (*1969 Toulouse, FR) is a professor of painting and textile art at Burg Giebichenstein Kunsthochschule Halle. In her sculptural work, she deals with both formal and content-related contradictions. In tufted tapestries and clay sculptures she plays with contrasts between surface and space, colour and structure, but also with the tension between comfort and horror.

ARTIST BAR TALK
Mehmet & Kazim

Wednesday, November 16, 2022
Favorit Bar, Damenstiftstraße 12, 80331 Munich

Twice a year, artists with an expressive and visual approach to art are invited to talk about themselves, their career and their work in the intimate setting of a bar talk.
The artist duo Mehmet & Kazim, who studied under Prof. Markus Oehlen at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich, add a remarkable facet to Munich's art scene as Kissing Cousins. There are two of them, they are cousins, they are called Akal and they paint in white and red - like Turkish AK and AL. Nevertheless, it is not a concept, but real painting. And high and low are of no importance.

5 YEARS FOUNDATION VAN DE LOO

H.M. Bachmayer, Dietrich Bartscht, Miriam Cahn, Gunter Damisch, Martin Disler, Franz Hitzler, Leiko Ikemura, Asger Jorn, Gustav Kluge, Uwe Lausen, E.R. Nele, Max Neumann, Helmut Sturm, HP Zimmer and artists from the ARTIST BAR TALK

“5 years Foundation van de Loo” is an opportunity to draw attention to our work and to present previously funded projects. It all started with JUNG UND WILD, a Munich perspective on 1980s painting, and with the new event format ARTIST BAR TALK at the Favorit Bar, so far with Andrew Gilbert, Leda Bourgogne, Marcel Hüppauff & Kolja Gollub and Aneta Kajzer, as well as planned with Mehmet & Kazim and Caroline Achaintre. It continued with publications on Gustav Kluge, Helmut Sturm, Franz Hitzler, Asger Jorn and Uwe Lausen. And last not least there is the continuous promotion of children and youngsters through the KINDERFORUM VAN DE LOO and the KUNSTLINGE! in the Pinakothek der Moderne. The exhibition offers an insight into the objectives and program of the foundation, not least based on a selection of works by the participating artists. We are looking forward to your visit!

ASGER JORN
HIS YEARS IN ITALY 1954-1973

An exhibition at the Foundation van de Loo from September to December 2021

In 1954, the Danish artist Asger Jorn (1914-1973) moved to Albisola, a small town on Italy's Ligurian coast famous for its ceramic tradition. There he expanded his international network, established contacts with artists such as Fontana, Matta, Lam or Farfa and, last but not least, founded the Situationist International as one of the most important post-war avant-gardes in Europe. With ceramics, bronze and marble, he opened up new pictorial possibilities and developed his painting to the expressiveness for which he is famous today. However, the significant role Jorn played in Italy and Italy for Jorn has not been adequately acknowledged until now.

The Foundation sponsored the publication of "Asger Jorn. His Years in Italy 1954-1973" by Ursula Lehmann-Brockhaus, who died in 2019. On occasion of the book release, the Foundation is showing a selection of Jorn's collages, paintings, bronzes, ceramics and documents that reveal references to Italy and offer an incentive to explore the subject further.

ARTIST BAR TALK
Aneta Kajzer

Monday, June 21, 2021
Favorit Bar

Film recording: Peter A. Pfaff

Twice a year, artists with an expressive and visual approach to art are invited to talk about themselves, their career and their work in the intimate setting of a bar talk.
Aneta Kajzer (*1989 Katowice, POL) is a painter who celebrates the painting process and colour. She trusts her experience that "the hand is quicker than the thought" and lets herself be guided intuitively from initial abstraction to figurative forms. On the floor, with her hands and large brushes, she creates humorous but also resistant images that captivate with their quality of colour and material.

THE FIRST YEARS OF GALERIE VAN DE LOO

Emil Cimiotti I Jean Dubuffet I Lothar Fischer I E.R. Nele I Henri Michaux I Hans Platschek I Heimrad Prem I Judit Reigl I Antonio Saura I Emil Schumacher I KRH Sonderborg

September to October 2020

In 1957 Otto van de Loo opened his gallery with an exhibition of KRH Sonderborg. This show was followed by numerous exhibitions in quick succession with artists who are now considered the main representatives of the "Informel", such as ER Nele, Cimiotti, Schumacher and Reigl. Painters such as Dubuffet, Fischer, Platschek, Prem and Saura were already developing "abstraction as a world language" with figurative inserts. The exhibition traces these years.

In this context, the van de Loo Foundation invites you to an artist talk with the sculptor ER Nele, who was part of the international art scene in the 1950s and 1960s. She will talk about her time in Munich, her exhibitions at Galerie van de Loo and her relationship with the gallery's artists.

ZU EINEM FEUERFUNKEN IN DEN FLUSS
Artist's edition by Franz Hitzler and Katharina Ponnier

More than a year ago Franz Hitzler and Katharina Ponnier came to the Foundation with the idea of producing an artist's book of etchings and poems. In a long and intensive process, the technically ambitious project took shape and was finally realised with the help of Joschi Josephski's etching workshop, the typesetter Werner Hiebl / Offizin Albis and the bookbinder Sabine Moosmüller.

Today we are very pleased to present a box containing 35 etchings and 24 poems. It has been published in an edition of 15 copies in the format 37 x 21 cm. Within eight chapters, the sheets, printed on both sides, lie loosely inside each other and can thus either be leafed through or taken out for framing. At the same time, Allitera has published a book with the collected poems of Katharina Ponnier, illustrated with the etchings from the portfolio.

In the showroom of Galerie van de Loo, "by-products" from the elaborate process of creation are also on display. Cover drafts, design drawings and collages for etchings as well as proofs give a very lively impression of Franz Hitzler's intensive work on the project.

ARTIST BAR TALK
Marcel Hüppauff und Kolja Gollub
November 4, 2020
Favorit Bar

Within Artist Bar Talk series, this time it was planned to invite the Hamburg-based artists Kolja Gollub and Marcel Hüppauff. Unfortunately this time, due to Covid restrictions, this could not take place with an audience. Nevertheless, it was possible hold the talk in the Favorit Bar. Peter Pfaff recorded it on film. Many thanks to him and the Favorit Bar.

Kolja Gollub (*1990 Bielefeld) and Marcel Hüppauff (*1972 Stuttgart) are part of the 8th Salon in Hamburg, co-founded by Roberto Ohrt, an open forum for studio play, exhibitions, research and discussions. Both don’t like the cliché of the artist as a brilliant individualist, but they seek the interplay with others and thus create counter-images to this not at all accidental isolation.

PLACARD - The history of the gallery on poster since the 1950s

The archive of Galerie van de Loo holds a large and very rare fund of exhibition posters that have never been shown before. Given the current situation, we are looking forward to colourful and densely hung walls in our showroom. The posters not only represent individual artists such as Pierre Alechinsky, Gunter Damisch, Asger Jorn, Uwe Lausen, Heino Naujoks, Arnulf Rainer, Antonio Saura, Walasse Ting, Wolf Vostell, HP Zimmer or the SPUR and GEFLECHT, but also provide an superb insight into graphic design at the time. The gallery is open by appointment only but the show can also be seen any time through the large shop windows. Individual posters are for sale.

ARTIST BAR TALK with Leda Bourgogne

on October, 21, 2019
DJ Rebecca Prechter
Favorit Bar, Munich

After Andrew Gilbert's impressive and entertaining kick-off in May this year, the ARTIST BAR TALK will take place for the second time at the Favorit Bar on October 21. This time, artist Leda Bourgogne, born in Vienna in 1989, is invited to discuss the approache of her artistic work in conversation with curator Dr Jana Baumann (Haus der Kunst).
Leda Bourgogne studied fine arts at the Städelschule in Frankfurt a.M. as a master student of Judith Hopf before moving her studio to Berlin in 2017. There, the artist works on object-like paintings, poetry and sculptures, which she does not, however, think of in these narrow categories. Rather, she sees the individual art forms as part of a closely interlocking concept that finds expression in exhibitions that are often set up as installations or - very recently - also in performances.

MIRIAM CAHN. LESEN IM STAUB
Drawings from the 1980s

Opening on the occasion of OPEN ART 2019 on Friday, September 13, from 6 p.m.
Exhibition duration thru October 30, 2019

"the overall impression is dusty'" wrote Miriam Cahn to Otto van de Loo in 1988, summarising her very precise ideas for the invitation card to the exhibition at that time. Before the Swiss artist turned to painting a few years ago, she worked mainly in black on paper for over 30 years. This resulted in either installation-like large formats, which occupied entire rooms, or small-format series, often dated precisely to the day.

Cahn developed the sheets in a performative, body-related act on the floor, scraping the jet-black chalk from a large block to dust and condensing it into haunting figures. Based on her very personal world of experience, with these works she takes a position towards herself that is as intimate-poetic as it is resistant-critical, and which still affects us as viewers today. Four of these series can currently be seen in the showroom of Galerie van de Loo Projekte. Cahn attaches great importance to her own texts, which she has always printed in catalogues to complement the illustrations of her works and which have now been republished by Hatje Cantz Verlag under the title "Das zornige Schreiben".

Julia Teichmann reads from texts by Miriam Cahn on September 14, at 6 p.m in Gabelsbergerstrasse19, Munich.

GUSTAV KLUGE
Prints and wood blocks - Artist Talk

Thursday, June 27, 2019, at 7 pm

Gustav Kluge will talk about the woodcut printing, which he discovered for himself 35 years ago and has pursued intensively ever since. A haunting oeuvre of reworked original prints on a wide variety of supports has emerged, and not least, the printing blocks themselves have become objects in their own right.
On the occasion of a current thematic exhibition, which opens on June 30 in the Museum Lothar Fischer, Neumarkt i.d.OPf., we also present the newly published catalogue raisonné of the printing blocks (ed. Kunstmuseum Reutlingen, Horst-Janssen-Museum Oldenburg, Museum Lothar Fischer, Neumarkt i.d. OPf.), sponsored by the van de Loo Foundation.
At the same time, woodcuts and printing blocks by Gustav Kluge are on display in our showroom, as well as, for the first time, some of Asger Jorn's woodcut blocks together with corresponding prints made in Munich in 1970.

ARTIST BAR TALK
Andrew Gilbert

Monday, May 6, 2019
Favorit Bar, Damenstiftstraße 12, 80331 Munich

Twice a year, artists with an expressive and visual approach to art are invited to talk about themselves, their career and their work in the intimate setting of a bar talk.

Berlin-based Scottish artist Andrew Gilbert (*1980 Edinburgh, GB), has dedicated himself to one theme: the excesses of the colonial era in Africa, especially that of the British Empire and their effects to this day. He creates disturbing worlds within his paintings, but also installations and sculptures, which not only openly express the absurdity of what happened, but also the impact of 19th century imperialism on today.

THE PARADISE NEXT DOOR
HEIKO HERRMANN

Selima Niggl will read from texts by and with Heiko Herrmann
Thursday, March 21, at 7 p.m.

"I don't want to paint, I want to recognise myself and thus the environment that is recognisable to me. Because you can only learn to understand the world as far as you learn to understand yourself. Painting for the sake of painting is no more than a beautiful conversation." (Heiko Herrmann)

From March 21 we will be showing paintings on glass by Heiko Herrmann in our showroom.

LOTHAR FISCHER. WORKS ON PAPER 1937-2003

This publication makes the artists rich oeuvre of drawings accessible to a broad public for the first time. The van de Loo Foundation hosted an evening with Christel Fischer, Dr. Pia Dornacher and Dr. Andreas Strobl to present the publication.

The catalogue is available for € 28 from Galerie van de Loo Projekte.

OPEN ART 2018 - THE FOUNDATION VAN DE LOO

On the occasion of OPEN ART, works by the SPUR and their companions PINOT GALLIZIO, HANS PLATSCHEK, MAURICE WYCKAERT and ASGER JORN are on display at the Foundation van de Loo.
It was a stroke of luck for the young artists of the SPUR (LOTHAR FISCHER, HEIMRAD PREM, HELMUT STURM, HP ZIMMER) that they met ASGER JORN and HANS PLATSCHEK shortly after the groups formation in 1958. They introduced them to international artistic and intellectual currents that were otherwise difficult to get in touch with in a post-war Munich. But also for PINOT GALLIZIO and MAURICE WYCKAERT and even for the "internationalist" JORN, the "City of the "Blaue Reiter"" was a magnet and the encounter with the young painter-rebels of the SPUR a great enrichment.
In April 1959, the 3rd Conference of the Situationist International took place in Munich. Its figurehead GUY DEBORD, as well as artist-members CONSTANT, JORN, WYCKAERT and GALLIZIO travelled to Munich and the SPUR was officially declared as the "German section of the Situationist International". But beyond the political debates of the conference and elaborate parties, it was the artists who connected in the expression of painting. The works and accompanying documentary material from the archive, reveal the broad spectrum of the founding history of the Otto van de Loo Gallery.
